Video: Black Friday protest @ Power 106 in L.A.
November 30th, 2009
Making the rounds this morning trying to shake off the rust of a 4 day weekend, and I came across this over @ worldstarhiphop.com. I thought it was cool to see mc’s stand up and voice their arguments, and I admire how Snoop has remained vocal on the topic. It would have been nice to see more recognizable west coast coast artists attend the protest. I”ll be interested to see if this type of event can spark some change.

You know, they say fuck the radio…. and they are acting like these individual radio stations have control over the bullshit they’re spinning.
Picketing in front of the station is a waste of energy.
What they should be doing is focusing on venues and outlets that are already supporting them…. like HoodHype, Internet Radio stations like Smoothbeats.com, Blogs and other outlets that SUPPORT their movement.
In doing that, we’re pulling people away from the mainstream radio…. and the more mainstream radio starts to see that they are losing money by NOT playing their local artists, they will either completely fold or change their tune to focus on the independent community.
All in all, the fact is, independent music isnt profitable. And until its profitable, you can picket till your legs fall off and you lose your voice and it wont make a different. Because unless these radio stations can turn a profit with your music, they are never going to spin it.
Picketing in front of a mainstream radio station is not gonna get the 14 year old girls to turn the radio dial… because quite frankly they could give a shit about your music unless they can shake their ass to it or get sucked into the marketing vacuum these labels and radio conglomerates create.
So fuck the radio stations, fuck the record labels. Support this internet thing so that these artists are making more scratch off the internet than with any label deal. That way we ruin the system, and everyone gets the support they deserve and the music gets the freedom it lost 40 years ago.
